Pizarro ISP June 30th Update

Sunday, June 30th, 2019

Our technical director began outlining a potential MIPS virtualization product in the forum of the Republic. This would require substantial further development, but teases a way to do shared hosting with far greater separation than any other virtualization solution on the market. In the near term, trying to engage our technical director on Pizarro tasks with a potential high return on effort has become a priority.

With June coming to an end the monthly accounting will be done in the coming week.

In preparation for spinning up a conversion engine, I will be publishing reports on my blog covering market segments which might be targeted for Pizarro specific and general Republican outreach. The first of these will be published within the next 24 hours.

Pizarro ISP June 23rd Update

Sunday, June 23rd, 2019

This week we got hit with a DDoS against the shared hosting server's IP address. As a result of this the machine is now accessible at 161.0.121.240 and the machine has been allocated several more addresses in our block. The .247 address remains blackholed as of this update. With this experience of seeing how our upstream handles sustained DDoS interruptions I am recommending shared hosting customers not already using our DNS servers to do so to speed recovery in the future. While this strategy can help with recovery from certain types of DDoS attack, this incident highlights the clock ticking on the growth we need to achieve. Specifically, the need to grow so that we can support multiple upstream connections and taking over the control of routing on our IP space.

There is no small irony in last week's major regional power grid failure having no observable impact on our uptime while packet weather generated a bona fide crisis. Millions of bipeds woke up last Sunday with only the sun for lighting and the internet cared not one iota. At the same time one can't prevent the DDoS scourge through buying more bandwidth anymore than one can fight a Mississippi River flood by taking more showers and drinking more water. That being said, we have to go to war with the internet we have, not the internet that we might wish to have.

Shared Hosting Update And First Substantial DDoS

Saturday, June 22nd, 2019

The IP address allocated to our shared hosting server has been blackholed to mitigate a DDoS attack targeting one of our customers. To bring customer hosted sites back online the machine has been given a number of IP addresses while waiting for the upstream provider to signal all clear and end the blackholing of the address.

In the interim the shared hosting machine and the sites it serves may be accessed at 161.0.121.240 while we await the return of .247's availability. Customers their site's DNS information hosted on ns1.qntra.net and ns2.qntra.net have had their domains directed to the new IP. Customers and vistors to site that eschew DNS for all of the very good reasons to do so may edit their host files and swap the 7 for a 0 to access sites. Once the .247 address emerges from the blackhole sites will be accessible through both .240 and .247 for the forseeable future.

SSH access is available as follows:

ssh username@161.0.121.240 -p 50022

To facilitate restoring public access to sites faster when suffering similar weather in the future, we invite all of our shared hosting customers to change their domain's name servers1 to ns1.qntra.net and ns2.qntra.net with your registrar. If your domain requires records for services beyond Pizarro hosting, just let me know what lines you need.

Comments, questions, and suggestions are welcome.

  1. The name server runs a simple daemon which only returns the authoritative DNS records for the domains it has. It will not resolve unknown names or do any of the other surface area increasing activities your other ISP's name server might do. []

Pizarro ISP June 16th Update

Sunday, June 16th, 2019

Auctions have set the June exchange rate at 7250 USD/BTC and secured payment for the datacenter this month. As already mentioned in the logs the datacenter auction delivered a higher BTC versus USD value despite requiring more fiat to satisfy. For next month I intend to carry out an auction for te datacenter's payment again. Invoices were sent.

Early this morning a fuckup in Argentina lead to a prolonged and extensive blackouts in Argentina and Uruguay. The power outage affected the area where the datacenter is located for several hours beginning at 7:02 local time (UTC -3), but my investiations today turned up no sign anything in the datacenter or Pizarro's rack lost power. I encourage all customers with machines located in Pizarro's care to check their machine's logs for evidence of power cycling.

Pizarro ISP June 9th 2019 Report

Sunday, June 9th, 2019

Auctions to set the June exchange rate are ongoing. Both have attracted bidders.

Substantial log archaeology and dealing was done to satisfy a valued client and replace their existing agreements which left little information on how to price renewal with a clearer ongoing agreement. S.MG will be taking ownership of their current servers in exchange for two servers delivered to Pizarro and converting their rental arrangement to a colocation arrangement. Once the servers make it to Uruguay, rent for the time between June and the server's delivery will be invoiced. The colocation will be invoiced after the June exchange rate is set.

Going forward server rentals will be priced to recover 90% of their book cost in the first year and have future years priced based on 50% of the machine's acquisition cost. The 90% target for the first year is intended not to serve as an absolute, but a base from which to work in order to meet our customer's needs as this is a Republic of Men, not Laws.

The May statement has been published.
