Pizarro ISP September 29th Update

Sunday, September 29th, 2019

A substantial investigation of the real estate market in Montevideo was undertaken after an offer was extended by Mircea Popescu to potentially acquire property to put to Republican use. This resulted the determination that buying real estate in the local market under present conditions is untenable.

The lease on the current habitation unit will expire near the end of June 2020. After the tourism season winds down in late February, I plan to search for the next rental with the aim of getting enough space to host Republican guests visiting the Oriental Republic. The upcoming tourist season is projected to be dismal due to the present Argentine crisis where last year's season was merely discouraging due to the ongoing Argentine malaise.

Stanislav has been assembling materials in his workshop for the upcoming hardware delivery run.

The weekly auctions this far have resulted in Republican winners the first two weeks, and no bids the second two weeks.

Sue to the delay in issuing September invoices, they will be sent shortly after the publication report based on the September 9th auction results.

*****************************************************************************

Due to the auction determined price trailing the outside exchange rate substantially, we took a hit in July on the auction transactions. As a result of this, we will be moving to weekly auctions beginning in September. This month's fiat auction, hopefully the last, will open shortly.

UY3 has depreciated to 0. Some of the peso denominated fiat expenses including apartment rent had their prices adjusted to account for inflation over the year. The potential for economic malaise in the region stemming from the neighbor across the river may bring those back down in USD terms sooner, rather than later.

Pizarro ISP July 28th 2019 Update

Sunday, July 28th, 2019

July Invoices will be issued tomorrow using a rate of 11,921 USD/BTC acquired earlier this month due to the failure to acquire an exchange rate using the auction mechanism earlier this month. Customers may elect to instead be invoiced at the price to be determined during the August auction. August will be the last month where the auction is conducted as a monthly event. Starting September 1st auctions will be done on a weekly basis, since the last update work has been done on the ground to smooth this transition. The reserve will be put to use for the August auction to prevent a repeat situation where an insane spread between markets inside and outside the forum manifests.

One customer has been set up with shared hosting and mp-wp while a new potential customer is interested in a Rockchip.

Pizarro ISP July 14th 2019 Update

Sunday, July 14th, 2019

This past week brought the issue of monthly auctions to a head and revealed an ongoing source of unnecessary complexity in our operations. A move to weekly auctions will be made, and the fiat reserve and local liquidity will be put to use in auctions. I will be exploring any rough edges we may encounter in the move, and plan to begin weekly auctions September 1st.

*****************************************************************************

It has been an eventful month. A deal was negotiated with S.MG exiting an ambiguous rental arrangement and converting their contract to colocation upon the future delivery of hardware in kind to replace the servers they are taking ownership of. We weathered a regional power outage without any known loss of uptime while shortly thereafter being hit with our first substantial DDoS attack. A promising environment for a future shared hardware virtualization offering was teased by our technical director.

Our technical director is further working on structuring his schedule in a way that will hopefully offer information on our next hardware buildout mission and development of a mechanized conversion engine.

Pizarro ISP June 30th Update

Sunday, June 30th, 2019

Our technical director began outlining a potential MIPS virtualization product in the forum of the Republic. This would require substantial further development, but teases a way to do shared hosting with far greater separation than any other virtualization solution on the market. In the near term, trying to engage our technical director on Pizarro tasks with a potential high return on effort has become a priority.

With June coming to an end the monthly accounting will be done in the coming week.

In preparation for spinning up a conversion engine, I will be publishing reports on my blog covering market segments which might be targeted for Pizarro specific and general Republican outreach. The first of these will be published within the next 24 hours.

Pizarro ISP June 23rd Update

Sunday, June 23rd, 2019

This week we got hit with a DDoS against the shared hosting server's IP address. As a result of this the machine is now accessible at 161.0.121.240 and the machine has been allocated several more addresses in our block. The .247 address remains blackholed as of this update. With this experience of seeing how our upstream handles sustained DDoS interruptions I am recommending shared hosting customers not already using our DNS servers to do so to speed recovery in the future. While this strategy can help with recovery from certain types of DDoS attack, this incident highlights the clock ticking on the growth we need to achieve. Specifically, the need to grow so that we can support multiple upstream connections and taking over the control of routing on our IP space.

There is no small irony in last week's major regional power grid failure having no observable impact on our uptime while packet weather generated a bona fide crisis. Millions of bipeds woke up last Sunday with only the sun for lighting and the internet cared not one iota. At the same time one can't prevent the DDoS scourge through buying more bandwidth anymore than one can fight a Mississippi River flood by taking more showers and drinking more water. That being said, we have to go to war with the internet we have, not the internet that we might wish to have.

Shared Hosting Update And First Substantial DDoS

Saturday, June 22nd, 2019

The IP address allocated to our shared hosting server has been blackholed to mitigate a DDoS attack targeting one of our customers. To bring customer hosted sites back online the machine has been given a number of IP addresses while waiting for the upstream provider to signal all clear and end the blackholing of the address.

In the interim the shared hosting machine and the sites it serves may be accessed at 161.0.121.240 while we await the return of .247's availability. Customers their site's DNS information hosted on ns1.qntra.net and ns2.qntra.net have had their domains directed to the new IP. Customers and vistors to site that eschew DNS for all of the very good reasons to do so may edit their host files and swap the 7 for a 0 to access sites. Once the .247 address emerges from the blackhole sites will be accessible through both .240 and .247 for the forseeable future.

SSH access is available as follows:

ssh username@161.0.121.240 -p 50022

To facilitate restoring public access to sites faster when suffering similar weather in the future, we invite all of our shared hosting customers to change their domain's name servers1 to ns1.qntra.net and ns2.qntra.net with your registrar. If your domain requires records for services beyond Pizarro hosting, just let me know what lines you need.

Comments, questions, and suggestions are welcome.

  1. The name server runs a simple daemon which only returns the authoritative DNS records for the domains it has. It will not resolve unknown names or do any of the other surface area increasing activities your other ISP's name server might do. []
